Cam: Hi, everyone, I’m Cam.  Yajie, have you bought a present yet for Louis?  It’s his birthday tomorrow.
Yajie: No, not yet! 
Cam: I got him something… but I need to learn how to say Happy Birthday in Chinese when I see him tomorrow.
Yajie:  I’ll teach you.  Today we can learn some ex<\/em>pression of co<\/em>ngratulations when somebody is celebrating a birthday.  Let’s check Key Words of the Day.

Cam: In English we say happy birthday when attending a birthday party. How to say this in Chinese?
Yajie: We say  “\u795d\u4f60\u751f\u65e5\u5feb\u4e50\uff01”
Cam: \u795d\u4f60\u751f\u65e5\u5feb\u4e50!
Yajie: Right. “\u795d\u4f60\u751f\u65e5\u5feb\u4e50\uff01”  Is how we would wish somebody a happy birthday. \u795d\u4f60 is used to express good wishes, sometimes with the implication of “co<\/em>ngratulating in advance”. \u795d,  zhù, the forth tone. It means offering good wishes. \u4f60, means you. \u795d\u4f60 together means I wish you….
Cam: \u795d\u4f60 (zhù n\u01d0).
Yajie: \u751f\u65e5 is birthday. \u751f, sh\u0113ng, the first tone. \u751f, to give birth to.
Cam: \u751f (sh\u0113ng). \u65e5 (rì), we learned it during last week. It means the day, the forth tone. \u65e5(rì). And \u661f\u671f\u65e5(X\u012bngq\u012b rì) is Sunday.
Yajie: Absolutely right! Well, Cam, you have a sound memory.
Cam: Xie xie.
Yajie: \u5feb\u4e50 means happy. \u5feb, k-u-a-i, kuài, the fourth tone. \u4e50, l-e, lè, also the fourth tone. Together it’s\u5feb\u4e50(kuài lè).
Cam: \u5feb\u4e50(kuài lè). \u6211\u5f88\u5feb\u4e50 (w\u01d2 h\u011bn kuài lè)\u3002I’m very happy. \u4f60\u5feb\u4e50\u5417\uff1f(n\u01d0 kuài lèma?)
Yajie: \u6211\u4e5f\u5f88\u5feb\u4e50 (w\u01d2 y\u011b h\u011bn kuài lè)\u3002I’m happy too.<\/p>\n

Yajie: Cam, how do you think you would respond if somebody said zhu ni sheng ri kuai le?
Cam: Could I say:  xie xie?
Yajie: Yes, that’s right.  Sometimes people just say \u751f\u65e5\u5feb\u4e50 for short.
Cam: Ok, this sounds reasonable, because  \u795d\u4f60 means wishing you….  In English, we say Happy Birthday for short instead of Happy Birthday to you.  When wishing somebody a happy birthday, it’s not necessary to specify the person.  So it’s the same as Chinese.  There is no need to say\u795d\u4f60(zhù n\u01d0).
Yajie: You got it. Besides\u751f\u65e5\u5feb\u4e50, there are other relevant ex<\/em>pressions. For example, you can say\u795d\u4f60\u8eab\u4f53\u5065\u5eb7 which means “I wish you good health”  \u8eab\u4f53is body. \u8eab, s-h-e-n, sh\u0113n, the first tone; \u4f53, t-i, t\u01d0, the third tone.
Cam: \u8eab\u4f53, sh\u0113n t\u01d0.
Yajie: And \u5065\u5eb7 means fine, or healthy. \u5065, jiàn, the forth tone; \u5eb7, k-a-ng-, k\u0101ng, the first tone.
Cam: \u5065\u5eb7 (jiànk\u0101ng).
Yajie: Together you can say\u795d\u4f60\u8eab\u4f53\u5065\u5eb7(zhù n\u01d0 sh\u0113nt\u01d0 jiànk\u0101ng).
Cam: \u795d\u4f60\u8eab\u4f53\u5065\u5eb7(zhù n\u01d0 sh\u0113nt\u01d0 jiànk\u0101ng).<\/p>\n
