A: Da jia hao. Hello, everyone. I’m Allen. In the next 5 minutes, we’ll learn how to talk a<\/em>bout hobbies. First, Key Words of the Day.<\/p>\n

Key Words of the Day<\/strong>
What’s your hobby? \u4f60\u6709\u4ec0\u4e48\u7231\u597d\uff1f\u6211\u7231\u5531\u6b4c I love singing\u3002\u6211\u7231\u6253\u4e52\u4e53\u7403 I love playing ping-pong. All in today’s Chinese Studio.<\/p>\n

Y: \u7231\u597d means hobby. Both \u7231 and \u597d are in the fourth falling tone. \u7231\u597d
A:  \u7231\u597d (ai hao), hobby.
Y: Now, how do you ask a person what his hobby is? Here’s a handy pattern: \u6709\u4ec0\u4e48\u7231\u597d? \u6709, have, \u4ec0\u4e48, what, \u7231\u597d, hobby. You can ask a<\/em>bout anybody’s hobby, simply by putting the name in front, such as Allen, or Yajie, or just a pronoun. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n

Co<\/em>nversation 1:<\/p>\n

A: Hey, Yajie, \u4f60\u6709\u4ec0\u4e48\u7231\u597d (ni you shen me ai hao)? What’s your hobby?
Y: \u6211\u7231\u5531\u6b4c\u3002I love singing. \u5531 (chang), the fourth tone, means to sing. \u5531. G-e, \u6b4c (ge), the first flat tone, means a song .
A: Wo ai chang ge. So I guess I can use wo ai – I love – plus a hobby, to describe all the hobbies I love.
Y: Yes you’re right. Let’s co<\/em>ntinue with the new words. \u4e52\u4e53\u7403, ping-pong.  Table tennis P-ing, \u4e52 (ping), and p-ang, \u4e53 (pang), are both in the first flat tone, \u4e52\u4e53. And then q-iu, \u7403 (qiu) means a ball, the second tone,  \u7403.
A: \u4e52\u4e53\u7403. Then to play ping-pong is \u6253\u4e52\u4e53\u7403. D-a, \u6253 (da), third tone, \u6253. Its original meaning is to beat. But it can also mean to play, as it does here. \u6211\u7231\u6253\u4e52\u4e53\u7403 (Wo ai da ping pang qiu), I love playing ping-pong.
Y: In addition to \u7231, there’s another verb, \u559c\u6b22, which is also common in daily life. \u559c\u6b22, like.  \u6211\u559c\u6b22\u6253\u4e52\u4e53\u7403, I like playing ping-pong.
A: Got it. \u559c\u6b22 (xi huan) is another word we often use when describing hobbies.
Y: Right. For instance: \u6211\u559c\u6b22\u5531\u6b4c, I like singing.
A: Yajie, if I really like a hobby, can I use the “hen” that we have learned before in front of \u559c\u6b22 (xi huan)?
Y: Surely you can. You can use it in front of \u7231 as well.
A: I see. That makes sense.<\/p>\n

Co<\/em>nversation 2:<\/p>\n

A: Yajie, I have something to co<\/em>nfess to you. Actually, I don’t love playing ping-pong. I lied because I know you and many of our colleagues \u559c\u6b22 the game.
Y: Oh, \u4f60\u4e0d\u559c\u6b22\u6253\u4e52\u4e53\u7403\uff1fThat doesn’t matter, \u6ca1\u5173\u7cfb\u3002We still like you, irrespective of whether you’re a fan of ping-pong or not.
A: Thank you. I’m touched. Also, you’ve just helped me figure out how to say “I don’t like something”, or “I don’t love something”. I just have to put a \u4e0d (bu), which means no or negative, in front. \u4e0d\u7231 (bu ai), don’t love; \u4e0d\u559c\u6b22 (bu xi huan), don’t like.
