Although he was born in the gutter, he became a brilliant man with wide learning and befriended Wen Zhong, Wanling of the State of Chu. Pleased neither with official corruption in the Chu State nor with a government limited to the nobility alone, he went to the Yue State as an aide to King Gou Jian of Yue. He played a big role in Yue&#8217;s rising and defeating of the State of Wu to shell off Yue&#8217;s shame of being defeated by the State of Wu previously. After the victory, he resigned and re-named himself Tao Zhu Gong. He became a successful businessman in his later years with his three operations leading to great fortune that was later all donated.
