Laozi is the pinyin Romanization for the Chinese characters which mean &quot;<strong>Old Master&nbsp;<\/strong>(\u5927\u5e08d<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.8em;\">&agrave;sh\u012b)<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.8em;\">.&quot; Laozi is also known as <strong>Lao Tan&nbsp;<\/strong>(\u8001<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 1.8em; font-family: \u5b8b\u4f53;\">\u8043<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.8em;\">L\u01ceo D\u0101n)&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.8em;\">(&quot;Old Tan&quot;) in early Chinese sources (see Romanization systems for Chinese terms). The <strong>Zhuangzi&nbsp;<\/strong>(\u5e84\u5b50<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.8em;\">Zhu\u0101ngz\u01d0)&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.8em;\">is the first text to use Laozi as a personal name and to identify Laozi and Lao Tan. The earliest materials associated with Laozi are in the Zhuangzi&rsquo;s Inner Chapters. The Outer Chapters of that work have ten logia in which Laozi is the main figure, four of which contain direct attacks on the <strong>Confucian&nbsp;<\/strong>(\u5b54\u5b50<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.8em;\">K\u01d2ngz\u01d0)<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.8em;\">&nbsp;virtues ofren, yi, and li that are reminiscent of passages from the Daodejing.
