First, Sentences in the Week.<\/p>\n<p>  \t<strong>Sentences in the Week<\/strong><br \/>  \t\u4f60\u6709\u4ec0\u4e48\u7231\u597d\uff1fWhat&rsquo;s your hobby? You can answer with either \u559c\u6b22 or \u7231. \u5f97 means have to. \u6211\u5f97\u51cf\u80a5, I have to lose weight. \u5e94\u8be5 means should. \u4f60\u5e94\u8be5\u53bb\u7761\u89c9\u3002You should go to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>  \tA: Hey, Yajie, \u4f60\u6709\u4ec0\u4e48\u7231\u597d (ni you shen me ai hao)? What&rsquo;s your hobby? \u7231\u597d(ai hao), hobby.<br \/>  \tY: \u6211\u7231\u5531\u6b4c\u3002I love singing. \u5531\u6b4c, singing.<br \/>  \tA: Wo ai chang ge, word for word, I- love-singing. So I guess I can use &ldquo;wo ai&rdquo; to describe all the hobbies I love.<br \/>  \tY: Correct. And we can also use the verb &ldquo;to like&rdquo;, \u559c\u6b22, as in, \u6211\u559c\u6b22\u5531\u6b4c (wo xi huan chang ge). Allen, do you remember how to say you don&#39;t love or don&#39;t like something?<br \/>  \tA: Just put \u4e0d (bu) before either\u7231 (ai) or \u559c\u6b22 (xi huan). Bu ai, or bu xi huan.<\/p>\n<p>  \tConversation 1<\/p>\n<p>  \tA: Hey Yajie, we learned many ways to \u8fd0\u52a8, to exercise, this week, such as: \u7f51\u7403 (wang qiu), tennis; and \u6e38\u6cf3 (you yong), swimming.<br \/>  \tY: Right. Because I have to lose weight, \u6211\u5f97\u51cf\u80a5\u3002\u5f97 means have to. \u6211\u5f97\u51cf\u80a5. I have to lose weight.<br \/>  \tA: So you have to diet and exercise. \u4f60\u5f97\u8282\u98df (dei jie shi)\uff0c\u8fd8\u5f97\u8fd0\u52a8 (hai dei yun dong)\u3002<br \/>  \tY: Yes, I&rsquo;ve booked a Yoga lesson. To say someone should do something, you use the construction: subject + \u5e94\u8be5\/ \u8be5 + what the subject should do.<\/p>\n<p>  \tConversation 3:<\/p>\n<p>  \tA: \u4f60\u600e\u4e48\u4e86 (ni zen me le)\uff1fWhat&rsquo;s wrong with you?<br \/>  \tY: \u6211\u6709\u70b9\u513f\u5934\u75bc (wo you dian tou teng)\u3002I have a bit of a headache.<br \/>  \tA: \u4f60\u5e94\u8be5\u53bb\u770b\u75c5 (ni ying gai qu kan bing)\u3002You should go to see a doctor.<br \/>  \tY: \u4e0d\u7528, No need. Here, \u4e0d changes its tone. Usually \u4e0d is in the fourth tone. But it changes to the second tone when followed by another fourth tone character. Remember, \u7528 is in the fourth falling tone.<br \/>  \tA: So the phrase reads bu (second tone) yong, no need. But in\u4e0d\u5e94\u8be5 (bu ying gai) and \u4e0d\u8be5 (bu gai), which mean should not, the bu remains in the fourth falling tone because the following character are not in the fourth tone.<br \/>  \tY: Hey, Allen, test time.
