Mandarin place words are nouns which describe a position or place. They may be the object of a sentence, or used to describe wher the object is.<\/p>\n

When used as a position, Mandarin place words are usually preceded by the particle \u5728 zài (to be located at). When used as an object, place words are usually preceded by \u6709 y\u01d2u (there is).
Types of Mandarin Place Words<\/p>\n

There are three main types of Mandarin place words:<\/p>\n

    Place names – e.g. \u53f0\u5317 (Táib\u011bi – Taipei); \u5b78\u6821 \/ \u5b66\u6821 (xuéxiào – school)
    Positio<\/em>nal nouns such as \u9019\u88e1 \/\u8fd9\u91cc (zhèl\u01d0 – here)
    Place word suffixes such as \u88e1 \/ \u91cc (l\u01d0) and \u4e0a (shàng)<\/p>\n

Place Names<\/p>\n

Mandarin place names are nouns which may precede other nouns to modify them, as in \u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u4eba (ji\u0101nádà rén – Canadian person). Place names usually do not use \u7684 (de) to modify other nouns. Geographic place names are not usually modified, but locations such as\u5b78\u6821 \/ \u5b66\u6821 (xuéxiào – school) may be preceded by an adjective.
Positio<\/em>nal Nouns<\/p>\n

Mandarin positio<\/em>nal nouns end in \u9762, as in \u5916\u9762 (wàimian – outside), but also include \u9019\u88e1 \/ \u8fd9\u91cc (zhèl\u01d0 – here), \u54ea\u88e1 \/ \u54ea\u91cc (n\u01celi – wher), and \u90a3\u88e1 \/ \u90a3\u91cc (nail – there).<\/p>\n

Positio<\/em>nal nouns can be used before any other noun, usually with \u7684 (de), as in these examples:<\/p>\n

    \u5916\u9762\u7684\u5b78\u6821
    \u5916\u9762\u7684\u5b66\u6821
    wàimian de xuéxiào
    outside the school<\/p>\n

    \u9019\u88e1\u7684\u90f5\u5c40
    \u8fd9\u91cc\u7684\u90ae\u5c40
    zhèl\u01d0 de yóujú
    the post office here <\/p>\n

Positio<\/em>nal nouns can also be used after some nouns to indicate position:<\/p>\n

Place Word Suffix<\/p>\n

Place word suffixes co<\/em>nvert nouns into place words. The most common place word suffixes are \u88e1 \/ \u91cc (l\u01d0); \u5916 (wài); \u4e0a (shàng); and \u4e0b (xià).<\/p>\n
