They may be the object of a sentence, or used to describe wher the object is.<\/p>\n<p>  When used as a position, Mandarin place words are usually preceded by the particle \u5728 z&agrave;i (to be located at). When used as an object, place words are usually preceded by \u6709 y\u01d2u (there is).<br \/>  Types of Mandarin Place Words<\/p>\n<p>  There are three main types of Mandarin place words:<\/p>\n<p>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Place names &ndash; e.g. \u53f0\u5317 (T&aacute;ib\u011bi &ndash; Taipei); \u5b78\u6821 \/ \u5b66\u6821 (xu&eacute;xi&agrave;o &ndash; school)<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Positio<em><\/em>nal nouns such as \u9019\u88e1 \/\u8fd9\u91cc (zh&egrave;l\u01d0 &ndash; here)<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Place word suffixes such as \u88e1 \/ \u91cc (l\u01d0) and \u4e0a (sh&agrave;ng)<\/p>\n<p>  Place Names<\/p>\n<p>  Mandarin place names are nouns which may precede other nouns to modify them, as in \u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u4eba (ji\u0101n&aacute;d&agrave; r&eacute;n &ndash; Canadian person). Place names usually do not use \u7684 (de) to modify other nouns. Geographic place names are not usually modified, but locations such as\u5b78\u6821 \/ \u5b66\u6821 (xu&eacute;xi&agrave;o &ndash; school) may be preceded by an adjective.<br \/>  Positio<em><\/em>nal Nouns<\/p>\n<p>  Mandarin positio<em><\/em>nal nouns end in \u9762, as in \u5916\u9762 (w&agrave;imian &ndash; outside), but also include \u9019\u88e1 \/ \u8fd9\u91cc (zh&egrave;l\u01d0 &ndash; here), \u54ea\u88e1 \/ \u54ea\u91cc (n\u01celi &ndash; wher), and \u90a3\u88e1 \/ \u90a3\u91cc (nail &ndash; there).<\/p>\n<p>  Positio<em><\/em>nal nouns can be used before any other noun, usually with \u7684 (de), as in these examples:<\/p>\n<p>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u5916\u9762\u7684\u5b78\u6821<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u5916\u9762\u7684\u5b66\u6821<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; w&agrave;imian de xu&eacute;xi&agrave;o<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; outside the school<\/p>\n<p>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u9019\u88e1\u7684\u90f5\u5c40<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u8fd9\u91cc\u7684\u90ae\u5c40<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; zh&egrave;l\u01d0 de y&oacute;uj&uacute;<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the post office here <\/p>\n<p>  Positio<em><\/em>nal nouns can also be used after some nouns to indicate position:<\/p>\n<p>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u5b78\u6821\u88e1\u9762<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u5b66\u6821\u91cc\u9762<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; xu&eacute;xi&agrave;o l\u01d0mi&agrave;n<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; inside the school<\/p>\n<p>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u684c\u5b50\u4e0a\u9762<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; zhu\u014dzi sh&agrave;ngmian<br \/>  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; on the table <\/p>\n<p>  Place Word Suffix<\/p>\n<p>  Place word suffixes co<em><\/em>nvert nouns into place words.
