If you’re living in China or near a Chinese neighborhood<\/span>, or if you have a Chinese friend that does celebrate<\/span> Chinese New Year, or you aren’t close to anything Chinese but are able to surf Chinese web sites (who don’t anyways ? \ud83d\ude42 ), you might have noticed the following festival decoration that is hanging on people’s doors, cars, or walls etc. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"Why<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Have you ever thought a<\/em>bout why it’s hanging upside down? It’s definitely not a random mistake if everybody does that. <\/span><\/p>\n

Well, before we reveal the mystery, you need to learn these three characters first. Yes, o<\/em>nly three characters for this post, I’m easy on you guys due to my festival mood today. <\/span>\ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

It’s fairly easy to translate the meaning of blessing word “<\/wbr>\u798f<\/wbr>\u5230(fú dào)” into English:”Blessings come”.
<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Do you see the third character that I sneaked in after the first two characters in the table<\/span> – “<\/wbr>\u5012(dào)”? It has the same pronunciation<\/span> with “<\/wbr>\u5230(dào)”, but with a different meaning:” turn upside down”.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Since “<\/wbr>\u798f(fú)” is in itself a completely<\/span> beautiful symbol that’ll look good in any decoration art alone, adding “<\/wbr>\u5230” to the art work is a bit too much. Then how can we express the full word of “<\/wbr>\u798f<\/wbr>\u5230”? The answer is using pun to replac “<\/wbr>\u5230” with “<\/wbr>\u5012”. So we can explicitly express this character out loud by turning the art work upside down – “<\/wbr>\u798f”<\/strong> – “<\/wbr>\u5230”<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\n
