Big and small, \u5927 dà and \u5c0f xi\u01ceo, are two of the simplest Chinese characters you’ve ever learned. Do you think you understand all of their occurrences? On this Learn Mandarin o<\/em>nline blog, I will try to lead you go deeper into Chinese language through simple characters like these. I’ve done it o<\/em>nce with another two high frequency Chinese characters \u4e0a and \u4e0b.<\/p>\n

First of all, let’s look at a few phrases that you might often come across on Chinese news media :<\/p>\n

    \u5927\u65b9\u5411 dà f\u0101ngxiàng (big vision)
    \u5927\u5c40 dàjú (the benefit of the majority )<\/p>\n

You also could use the following words on a daily basis :<\/p>\n

    \u5927\u5bb6 dàji\u0101 (we all, or you all)
    \u5927\u4f17 dàzhòng (general taste )
    \u5927\u4f53\u4e0a dàt\u01d0shàng (overall )<\/p>\n

Then some small phrases:<\/p>\n

    \u5c0f\u5bb6\u5b50\u6c14 xi\u01ceoji\u0101ziqì (small-minded)
    \u5c0f\u4eba xi\u01ceorén (petty person)<\/p>\n

You may also encounter the Chinese idioms with both characters in the following list.<\/p>\n

    \u5927\u4e8b\u5316\u5c0f dàshì huà xi\u01ceo (reduce major issues to minor ones)
    \u4ee5\u5c0f\u89c1\u5927 y\u01d0 xi\u01ceo jiàn dà (to get the big picture from small details)
    \u5927\u5927\u5c0f\u5c0f dàdàxi\u01ceoxi\u01ceo (big and small)
    \u5c0f\u5deb\u89c1\u5927\u5deb xi\u01ceow\u016bjiàndàw\u016b (a giant in the presence of a super-giant; appear insignificant when compared with)<\/p>\n
