M: Well, we’ve just finished a thrilling story a<\/em>bout yìzh\u012b xi\u01ceo ni\u01ceo, yì zh\u012b m\u0101o, hé li\u01ceng zh\u012bdà g\u01d2u. So how a<\/em>bout the zoo, and some more animals?<\/p>\n

S: H\u01ceo zhúyì. Ok. Listen out for a new way to say ‘us’, and the word for ‘zoo’.<\/p>\n

M: Zh\u01d4nbèi, k\u0101ish\u01d0.<\/p>\n

S: ML, \u4eca\u5929\u54b1\u4eec\u53bb\u54ea\u513f? j\u012bn ti\u0101n zánmen qù nar?<\/p>\n

M: We’ll go to the zoo \u54b1\u4eec\u53bb\u52a8\u7269\u56ed zánmen qù dòngwùyuán.<\/p>\n

S: \u53bb\u52a8\u7269\u56ed? \u90a3\u592a\u597d\u4e86\uff01\u54b1\u4eec\u80fd\u770b\u5230\u5f88\u591a\u52a8\u7269 nà tài h\u01ceole! Zánmen néng kàndao h\u011bn d\u016bodòngwu. I already know some animals’ names in Chinese.<\/p>\n

M: Such as?<\/p>\n

S: ‘Rats’ is l\u01ceosh\u01d4, and ‘ox’ is níu.<\/p>\n

M: Hey, not bad, Stuart!<\/p>\n

S: Of course! And I’m sure I can learn more in the zoo.<\/p>\n

M\uff1aFor example, the tigers, \u8001\u864el\u01ceoh\u01d4.<\/p>\n

S: And rabbits\u8fd8\u6709\u5154\u5b50 hái y\u01d2u tùzi.<\/p>\n

M: Rabbits are so cute \u5154\u5b50\u662f\u90a3\u4e48\u53ef\u7231 tùzi shìnàme k\u011bài.<\/p>\n

S: Just like me.<\/p>\n

M: And now, k\u011baì de Stuart and I will look at the new words.<\/p>\n

S: ML, \u4eca\u5929\u54b1\u4eec\u53bb\u54ea\u513f?<\/p>\n

M: j\u012bn ti\u0101n zán men qù nar? \u54b1\u4eec ZAN MEN zánmen means ‘us’. But it’s a little bit different from w\u01d2men. Zánmen always includes the speaker and the person or persons he or she is speaking to.<\/p>\n

S: W\u01d2men might, or might not, include those being spoken to.<\/p>\n

M: We, the we including the listener, go to the zoo \u54b1\u4eec\u53bb\u52a8\u7269\u56ed<\/p>\n

S: zán men qù dòngwùyuán \u52a8\u7269\u56ed. If \u56ed YUAN means ‘park’ or ‘garden’ yuán, and a dòngwùyuán is a zoo, guess what a dòngwù is.<\/p>\n

M: Yes, a dòngwù is an ‘animal’, so dòngwù means ‘animal’.<\/p>\n

S: Now say, we, including the listener, are going to the zoo. Méi cùo. \u54b1\u4eec\u53bb\u52a8\u7269\u56ed zán men qù dòngwùyuán.<\/p>\n

M: And what does this sentence mean: \u5728\u52a8\u7269\u56ed\u91cc, \u6211\u4eec\u80fd\u770b\u5230\u5f88\u591a\u52a8\u7269\u3002Again, zài dòngwùyuán l\u01d0, w\u01d2men néng kàndao h\u011bn d\u016bo dòngwù.<\/p>\n

S\uff1aDuì le! In the zoo we can see lots of animals.<\/p>\n

M: rats \u8001\u9f20, LAO SHU l\u01ceosh\u01d4.<\/p>\n

S: Why on earth do we start with rats, ML?<\/p>\n

M: Because now we’ll learn the first two of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, and the l\u01ceosh\u01d4 year is the first year in that 12-year cycle.<\/p>\n

S: I see! The measure word for l\u01ceosh\u01d4 is zh\u012b, the same as we learnt for  ni\u01ceo, m\u0101o and g\u01d2u. Now everyone say, that rat is very big. H\u011bn h\u01ceo, \u90a3\u53ea\u8001\u9f20\u5f88\u5927 nèi zh\u012b l\u01ceosh\u01d4 h\u011bn dà.<\/p>\n

M: The second animal is the ox \u7b2c\u4e8c\u4e2a\u52a8\u7269\u662f\u725b\u3002\u725bNIU níu, ox, or cattle in general. And the measure word is \u5934 TOU tóu, which means ‘head’. Same as in English, we say ‘head of cattle’, as in \u4e00\u5934\u725b yì tóu níu.<\/p>\n

S: So let’s finish by saying, That ox is very big.<\/p>\n

M: H\u011bn h\u01ceo. \u90a3\u5934\u725b\u5f88\u5927 nèi tóu niú h\u011bn dà.<\/p>\n

S: And now it’s time to say zàijiàn.<\/p>\n
