In the year 721, he passed the Dianshi (final imperial examination) to earn himself the academic title Jinshi, and took the post of Chengxiang (prime minister in ancient China). Today there are over 400 poems of his that have been preserved. He was a master of Buddhism, and a piece of Buddhist work The Holy Teaching of Vimalakirti was named after him, which was a book used by him to teach his students.
