He was an author in the Late Yuan Dynasty and the early Ming Dynasty. He was versatile and talented, being familiar with classics and masters both in modern times and ancient times. He also was familiar with poems, prose, astronomy, geography, medicine and aspect astrology, etc.. At the age of 35, he passed the imperial examination and was selected as Jinshi, but later he gave up the official title and returned back to his hometown. There he created his works and together with his disciple Luo Guanzhong, he studied the writing of Sanguo Yanyi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and Sansui Pingyao Zhuan (Taming Devils).
