Tang&rsquo;s courtesy name was Yireng, pseudo<em><\/em>nym Hairuo and pen name Qingyuan Taoist. Being a Han nationality, he was a native of Linchuan (present-day Fuzhou City), Jiangxi Province. In 1583 (the eleventh year of Wanli period), Tang become a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations. In the Chinese history of literature, Tang was on a par with such playwrights as Guan Hanqing and Wang Shifu and held an im<em><\/em>portant place in both Chinese and world histories of literature. Tang wrote four great legends, Mudan Ting (The Peony Pavilion), Handan Ji (Record of Handan), Nanke Ji (Record of Southern Bough) and Zichai Ji (The Purple Hairpin), which were collectively called The Four Dreams at Yu Ming Tang.
