Lesson 038 How Much Is It for Five Cups of Tea?

S: Wow, that was a lot of Chinese; that's to get you thinking in Chinese. Before finishing, let's look at some of the new things.
M: 第一个问题。 First question. Di yi ge wenti.. First, di yi. The di is DI di, 4th tone. The yi is the yi er san of one, two, three. So how do we say ‘second'? Dui le, di er, di er.
S: And, ‘the third glass of beer'…. Dui le. 第三杯啤酒, di san bei pijiu.
M: And ‘the second question'? …. Dui le, 第二个问题, di er ge wenti.
S: Wo xiang yi xiang. I'll think about it. Wo xiang yi xiang.
M: Lastly, 一共,altogether, in total, yi gong. YI GONG yi gong. Altogether, three kuai. Yi gong, san kuai. Yi gong san kuai.

Lesson 039 Count

 M: Nimen hao! 我是赵老师. Teacher Zhao. Wo shi Zhao laoshi.
S: I am teacher Bai. 我是白老师, wo shi Bai laoshi. ML, we’re being a bit formal today?
M: Yes, but it’s one way of teaching the word for ‘teacher’.
S: Which is, everybody? Did you catch it?
M: Wo shi Zhao laoshi.
S: Get it?.
M: Dui le, ‘Teacher’ is laoshi. Laoshi LAO SHI laoshi.
S: Laoshi is often used as a term of respect for someone who’s probably older than you, maybe smart, and an ok person.
M: Teacher says, 老师说,laoshi shuo, 好好学习, haohao xuexi.
S: 学 xue, 2nd tone, we know means ‘to learn’.
M: 学习 XUE XI xuexi, also means ‘to learn’. 好好学习, study well or hard. Haohao xuexi.
S: Now its time to xuexi some big numbers.
M: 我们已经学了,we’ve learnt, women yijing xue le, from 1 to 99. What is 90 in Chinese? Dui le, 九十, jiu shi.
S: And 99? Dui le, 九十九, jiu shi jiu. Hen hao. Zhao laoshi, will now count in tens from 50 to 100, and then in hundreds to 1,000. Repeat everything, loudly, try to get the tones right. Then tell us the word for ‘hundred’ and ‘thousand’.
M: Let’s go. 50, wu shi, liu shi, qi shi, ba shi, jiu shi, 一百,yi bai, er bai, or liang bai, san bai, si bai, wu bai, liu bai, qi bai, ba bai, jou bai, 一千, yi qian.
S: Got it. Say ‘one hundred’. Dui le, yi bai, yi bai.
M: Now say ‘one thousand’. Dui le, yi qian, yi qian.
S: How to say ‘one hundred thirty’. Try. … Dui le, yi bai san shi, yi bai san shi.
M: How about three hundred and forty eight? Try. …. Hen hao, 三百四十八,san bai si shi ba.
S: 再来一个, one more, zai lai yi ge. Say, one thousand. … dui le, yi qian, yi qian.

M: Yes, but we’ll use laoshi, teacher, so you guys at home get familiar with it. Bai laoshi, ni tongyi ma?
S: Zhao Laoshi, wo tong yi.
M: Hao. Jin tian shi 复习时间, revision time, fuxi shijian.
S: Di yi, first,你们的功课, your homework, nimen de gongke.
M: Numbers.
S: The first was 121, which is?..…
M: yi bai er shi yi, say it out loud, yi bai er shi yi. zai lai yi ci, once again, Yi bai er shi yi.

Lesson 032 Revision of Going to the Bar

 M: 朋友们,你们好! 我是曼丽.
S: Wo shi Stuart. No time to waste!
M: Stuart, are you happy today? 你今天高兴吗? Ni jintian gaoxing ma?
S: 今天我非常高兴. Jin tian wo feichang gaoxing.
M: 为什么. Wei shenme?
S: 因为Because, yinwei, we’re going to the bar, see a few friends. You at home, try to pick out the words for ‘bar’ and ‘a few’. 因为我们要去酒吧, 看几个朋友.
M: Yinwei women yao qu jiuba, kan ji ge pengyou.
S: ‘Bar’, and ‘a few’. Get them? Dui le. ‘Bar’ is jiuba, JIU BA, jiuba. Very important word.
M: jiuba, say it again, jiuba. Out of interest, 酒 jiu means alcoholic drinks, and the ba comes from the English word ‘bar’. And how about ‘a few’? Listen:
S: See a few friends. Kan ji ge pengyou.
M: Right! Ji ge, JI GE, ji ge, a few. A few friends, ji ge peng you.
S: 好,现在我们去酒吧, now let’s go to the bar. xianzai women qu jiuba.

S: I prefer ‘electric ladder’! Hao, women zuo dianti.
M: The lift’s arrived. 电梯来了. Dianti lai le.
S: 请进.Qing jin.
M: Xiexie.
S: What floor is the bar on? 酒吧在几层? Jiuba zai ji ceng?
M: 酒吧在二层. Jiuba zai er ceng.
S: 好,二层. Er ceng.
M: we’ve arrived. 到了, dao le.
S: Ladies first. 请,qing.
M: Xiexie.
S: And a quick explanation before we have a drink. Remember my room is on the 14th floor, shi si lou. Lou can mean ‘floor’ or ‘storey’.
M: And so can 层, ceng CENG ceng.
S: What floor is the bar on? Jiuba zai ji ceng?
M: Jiuba zai ji ceng.
S: 几JI ji, can mean ‘a few’, as in ‘ji ge peng you’, and sometimes it means ‘how many’, as in ‘ji ceng?’ ‘how many floors?’, or, in this case, ‘what floor’. Jiuba zai ji ceng?
M: zai er ceng.
S: 一 二, 二层. Second floor.
M: To finish, let’s say all the Chinese again. We’ll repeat everything.
S: Repeat with us, in a loud voice.
M: 你今天高兴吗? Ni jintian gaoxing ma?

M: 为什么. Wei shenme?

Lesson 026 We’ll Go to Your Room.

M: At the end of our last lesson, Stuart just needed his key, tā de yàoshi.
S: Now I have my key. Xiànzài wǒ yǒu wǒ de yàoshi.
M: So now we’ll go to your room. Xianzai women qu nide fangjian. Xianzai women qu nide fangjian.
S: Where’s the lift? 电梯在哪儿?Diàntī zài nǎr?
M: 电梯在那儿。Diàntī zài nàr。
S: You get in first, ML. ML, 你先进,ni xian jin.
M: 不,bu! 你先进。
S: 别客气,请,qing.
M: 好吧,xiexie.
S: What floor? 几楼? Ji lou?
M: 14th floor. Shí sì lóu. shí sì lóu.
S: Hao, women qu shisi lou. Hao, women qu shisi lou.
M: And we’ll practice the new stuff on the way up.
S: Ok, we are back again. I’m feeling lazy, where’s the lift? Dianti zai nar?
M: Dianti zai nar. Dian DIAN dian, means electric, like in ‘dianhua’, ‘electric words’, or ‘telephone’. Ti TI ti, is ‘ladder’, or ‘staircase’.
S: So guess what dianti means. Dui le. ‘Lift’ or ‘elevator’, dianti.
M: The lift is there. Diantizai nar, dianti zai nar.
S: Ever the gentleman, I said. ML, 妳先进.
M: ni xian jin qu. Xian XIAN xian, means ‘first’ or ‘before’. Jin JIN jin, 4th tone, here means ‘to enter’. Ni xian jin. You get in first.
S: Ni xian jin. Also polite, ML replied,
M: 不,你先进。But Stuart insisted.
S: Qing. Please.
M: We often say qing, when offering to let someone on the bus first, or go through the door first, that type of situation.
S: And I asked, ‘what floor?’ Ji lou. You often hear nice people ask you this in the lift, and you can ask them if they can’t reach the buttons.
M: ji lou? Ji JI ji, means ‘how many?’. Lou LOU lou, means ‘storey’, ‘floor’. Ji lou? What floor? Ji lou?
S: shi si lou, 14th floor, shi si lou.
M: The dialogue again. 现在我们去你的房间. Xianzai women qu nide fangjian.
S: 电梯在哪儿? Dianti zai nar?
M: 电梯在那儿. Dianti zai nàr.
S: ML, 妳先进, ni xian jin.
M: bù,nǐ xiān jìn.
S: Qing.
M: xiexie.
S: 几楼? Ji lou?
M: Shí sì lóu. shí sì lóu.
S: 好,我们去十四楼. Hao, women qu shisi lou.
M: And up we go! 我们上去. Women shang qu.
S: Great! 我们到了十四楼. Wǒmen dào le shí sì lóu. And here is my room, 我的房间在这儿。我开门,I’ll open the door. ML, qǐng.

Lesson 027 What’s Your Name?

  M: Da jia hao, huanying dao xianzai xue hanyu, Learn Chinese Now!
S: We’re in my hotel room. Meeting some new people tonight, so now we’ll keep learning things like ‘what’s your name?’ ‘My name is’… Then I can have a rest.
M: Now listen and repeat. Remember, xing is ‘family name’, xing. mingzi is ‘given name’, mingzi. Kaishi!
S: 我是Stuart Parkins. Wo xing Parkins. Bai is my Chinese xing, which comes before the mingzi in Chinese names. 白是我的中文姓. Bai shi wo de zhongwen xing.
M: 我是赵曼丽. Wo shi Zhao Manli. 我姓赵. Wo xing Zhao. 我的名字是曼丽. Wo de mingzi shi Manli.
S: 我的中文名字是君士. Wo de zhongwen mingzi shi Junshi. So I am called Bai Junshi. 我叫白君士. Wo jiao Bai Junshi.
M: Hao. Let’s look at what we just said.
S: Wo xing Bai. Easy. My family name is Bai. Wo xing Bai.
M: Bai is his Chinese surname. Bai shi ta de zhongwen xing. The zhong in Zhongwen is the same one as in zhongguo, the Middle Kingdom, China. Wen WEN wen, 2nd tone, wen, means ‘language’. zhongwen means the ‘Chinese language’. Wo de zhongwen xing. My Chinese family name.
S: So what does this mean? Wo de zhongwen mingzi shi Junshi. Dui le. My Chinese given name is Junshi – meaning, appropriately, gentleman scholar. So, wo jiao Bai Junshi.
M: Ta jiao Bai Junshi. Wo jiao Zhao Manli. 叫 JIAO jiao, is a verb, meaning ‘name’ or ‘call’. Wo jiao Zhao Manli, ‘I am called ZML’, or ‘my name is ZML’.
S: So what does this mean? 你叫什么名字?
M: Ni jiao shenme mingzi?
S: Dui le! Literally, ‘You are called what name?’ In real English, ‘What’s your name?’ Here, the mingzi is understood to mean the whole name, xing and mingzi.
M: Ni jiao shenme mingzi?
S: Wo jiao Bai Junshi.
M: You say it at home. Ask the question, then answer yourself. What’s your name? My name is something something. Ready? With Stuart, go!
S: Ni jiao shenme mingzi? Wo jiao Fred Smith, or whatever. Again. …
M: Feichang hao! You’ve earnt a three second rest!
S: Now let’s be very polite. Remember the polite form of ni, you? Right, it’s nin.
M: And two lessons ago the lady at the front desk asked Stuart, Nin gui xing? Gui here means ‘noble’. Nin gui xing?
S: What is your noble family name? That seems pretty polite. Nin gui xing?
M: Wo xing Zhao.
S: You say it at home, use your own name.
M: Hen hao! But Stuart is looking a bit tired.
S: Dui, wo hen lei. Wo hen lei.

M: Stuart, are you happy today? 你今天高兴吗? Ni jintian gaoxing ma?
S: 不高兴! bu gaoxing!
M: Why? 为什么? Wei shenme?
S: Wei shenme?! You know why! Last time you told me my Chinese is inappropriate!
M: Well, ok, ni de zhongwen mingzi, Bai Junshi, White Gentleman Scholar, it’s perfect for you.
S: Really? 真的吗? Zhen de ma?
M: zhen de. Still unhappy? 你还不高兴吗? Ni hai shi bu gaoxing ma?
S: 现在我高兴。Xianzai wo gaoxing. Now I’m very happy. Wo hen gaoxing.
M: Well, that was a nice start to the lesson. Repeat everything with us. This should be a habit by now. Let’s look at the new stuff.

M: Ta de yingwen mingzi shi Stuart. What does yingwen mean? A clue. Zhongguo is China, and Yingguo, yingguo, is England. Zhongwen is Chinese. So yingwen is? yes, English, yingwen YING WEN, yingwen, 1st tone, 2nd tone, yingwen.
S: Wo de yingwen mingzi shi Stuart. Say it with ML, use your own name, even if you’re French or something.

M: Because we all know what yingwen means. 因为我们都知道英文是什么意思.

S: And the reply usually starts with, 因为, yinwei. Yinwei, of course, means ‘because’. Yinwei.
M: And by now you can say ‘happy’ in Chinese? Duile. Gaoxing GAO XING, gaoxing.

M: Just one more word. jintian JINTIAN jintian, means ‘today’. Say it, jintian, jintian. Hen hao.
S: Now for a quick test. You at home say. Today I am not happy. …..
M: Dui le. Today I am not happy, 今天我不高兴. Jintian wo bu gaoxing.
S: Now everybody say, with no help from us, Today we are very happy. …
M: Dui le. 今天我们很高兴。
S: Now try, Today we’re all very happy.
M: Feichang hao! 今天我们都很高兴. Zai lai yi ci. Again. Smile, and say it loudly. Jintian women dou hen gaoxing.

Lesson 030 I’m Waiting for A Friend.

  S: 朋友们,你们好! 我是Stuart.
M: Wo shi ML. 欢迎来到Learn Chinese Now. Let’s not waste time. 我们不要浪费时间. women bu yao langfei shijian. Repeat everything, and, yi er san. Kaishi!
S: Now listen for the Chinese for ‘tell’ and ‘friends’.
M: Stuart, please tell our friends what time it is. 请告诉我们的朋友们, 现在是几点钟. Qing gaosu women de pengyoumen xianzai shi jidian zhong.
S: 朋友们,现在是六点. Pengyoumen, xianzai shi liu dian.
M: Please tell our friends where we are now. 请告诉我们的朋友们现在我们在哪儿.
S: 朋友们,现在我们在我的房间. Pengyoumen, xianzai women zai wo de fangjian.
M: We’re waiting for a friend. 我们在等一个朋友. Women zai deng yi ge pengyou.
S: Then we’ll go to the bar. 然后我们去酒吧。Ranhou women qu jiuba. Wo hen gaoxing.
M: Ok, Stuart, first we have to check the new words.
S: Ok. Let’s not waste time. 我们不要浪费时间
M: women bu yao langfei shijian. Bu yao, literally ‘not want’, bu yao. But it actually means “don’t”. Langfei LANGFEI langfei, to ‘waste’. Shijian SHIJIAN shijian, is ‘time’.
S: So, pengyoumen, try to say, with no help from us, ‘waste time’. … Dui le, langfei shijian. Langfei shijian.
M: Now try, let’s not waste time…….. Hen hao. Women bu yao lang fei shijian. 再来一次. Once again. Zai lai yi ci. Women bu yao lang fei shijian.
S: And did you catch how we say ‘friends’? Right. Pengyoumen, pengyoumen.
M: Now, if ‘we’ is women, and ‘I’ is wo, if ‘they’ is tamen, and ‘he’ or ‘she’ is ta, and if pengyoumen means ‘friends’, then how do we say ‘friend’? Right, pengyou, PENGYOU, pengyou, 2nd tone, 3rd tone, pengyou. Say it, pengyou, pengyou.
S: Hen hao. Now, do you remember ML saying?
M: And we’re waiting for a friend. 我们在等一个朋友. Women zai deng yi ge pengyou.
S: And do you remember, way back in lesson 1, that we told you Chinese has lots of classifiers, like head of cattle, where ‘head’ is the classifier? And how we always say, one ge person, or three ge persons. By the way, you can also call classifiers ‘measure words’, same idea.
M: Well, we’ve already used ge. Remember 打个电话,make a phone call, da ge dianhua. Well, the ge here is the measure word for ‘phone call’.
S: Now listen again to ML say, ‘we’re waiting for a friend’.
M: 我们在等一个朋友. Women zai deng yi ge pengyou.
S: There’s the ge again. Can you guess how to say ‘three friends”?
M: Dui le. 三个朋友. San ge pengyou.
S: And four friends?
M: Right. 四个朋友,si ge pengyou.
S: Five friends.
M: 五个朋友 wu ge pengyou.
S: Enough, enough! 够了,够了! That’s enough friends.
M: So, pengyoumen, see you tomorrow. 明天见.

Lesson 031 The Bar Is on the Second Floor.

 M: 朋友们,你们好! 我是曼丽.
S: Wo shi Stuart. No time to waste!
M: Stuart, are you happy today? 你今天高兴吗? Ni jintian gaoxing ma?
S: 今天我非常高兴. Jin tian wo feichang gaoxing.
M: 为什么. Wei shenme?
S: 因为Because, yinwei, we’re going to the bar, see a few friends. You at home, try to pick out the words for ‘bar’ and ‘a few’. 因为我们要去酒吧, 看几个朋友.
M: Yinwei women yao qu jiuba, kan ji ge pengyou.
S: ‘Bar’, and ‘a few’. Get them? Dui le. ‘Bar’ is jiuba, JIU BA, jiuba. Very important word.
M: jiuba, say it again, jiuba. Out of interest, 酒 jiu means alcoholic drinks, and the ba comes from the English word ‘bar’. And how about ‘a few’? Listen:
S: See a few friends. Kan ji ge pengyou.
M: Right! Ji ge, JI GE, ji ge, a few. A few friends, ji ge peng you.
S: 好,现在我们去酒吧, now let’s go to the bar. xianzai women qu jiuba.
M: We’ll take the lift. 我们坐电梯. Women zuo dianti.
S: I prefer ‘electric ladder’! Hao, women zuo dianti.
M: The lift’s arrived. 电梯来了. Dianti lai le.
S: 请进.Qing jin.
M: Xiexie.
S: What floor is the bar on? 酒吧在几层? Jiuba zai ji ceng?
M: 酒吧在二层. Jiuba zai er ceng.
S: 好,二层. Er ceng.
M: we’ve arrived. 到了, dao le.
S: Ladies first. 请,qing.
M: Xiexie.
S: And a quick explanation before we have a drink. Remember my room is on the 14th floor, shi si lou. Lou can mean ‘floor’ or ‘storey’.
M: And so can 层, ceng CENG ceng.
S: What floor is the bar on? Jiuba zai ji ceng?
M: Jiuba zai ji ceng.
S: 几JI ji, can mean ‘a few’, as in ‘ji ge peng you’, and sometimes it means ‘how many’, as in ‘ji ceng?’ ‘how many floors?’, or, in this case, ‘what floor’. Jiuba zai ji ceng?
M: zai er ceng.
S: 一 二, 二层. Second floor.
M: To finish, let’s say all the Chinese again. We’ll repeat everything.
S: Repeat with us, in a loud voice.
M: 你今天高兴吗? Ni jintian gaoxing ma?
S: 今天我非常高兴. Jin tian wo feichang gaoxing.
M: 为什么. Wei shenme?
S: 因为我们要去酒吧, Yinwei women yao qu jiuba. 看几个朋友, kan ji ge pengyou.
M: 我们坐电梯. Women zuo dianti.
S: 电梯来了. Dianti lai le. 请进.Qing jin.
M: Xiexie.
