The famous ancient Silk Road and China’s Grand Canal, the world’s lo<\/em>ngest artificial waterway, were inscribed on the list of World Heritage Sites here on Sunday.

<\/strong>Jointly submitted(\u8054\u5408\u7533\u62a5)<\/strong> by China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, the application for adding part of the Silk Road(\u4e1d\u7ef8\u4e4b\u8def),<\/strong> which served as a corridor(\u8d70\u5eca)<\/strong> for trade and cultural exchanges(\u5546\u4e1a\u6587\u5316\u4ea4\u6d41)<\/strong> between Asia and Europe dating back to 2,000 years ago, to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) list was approved(\u6279\u51c6)<\/strong> by the World Heritage Committee(\u4e16\u754c\u9057\u4ea7\u59d4\u5458\u4f1a)<\/strong> at a session in the Qatari capital.
 
The application co<\/em>nsists of 33 historical sites(\u9057\u8ff9)<\/strong> along the millennium-old trade route, including 22 in China, eight in Kazakhstan and three in Kyrgyzstan. They range from palaces(\u5bab\u6bbf)<\/strong> and pagoda(\u5b9d\u5854)<\/strong> sites in cities to ruins(\u5e9f\u589f)<\/strong> in remote, inaccessible deserts(\u6c99\u6f20).<\/strong>
 
Participants at the meeting said the 1,794-km canal(\u8fd0\u6cb3),<\/strong> which runs from Beijing to Hangzhou in China’s eastern Zhejiang province, is a valuable fruit of the Chinese people’s diligence(\u52e4\u52b3)<\/strong> and wisdom(\u667a\u6167),<\/strong> adding that its inclusion has enriched(\u5145\u5b9e)<\/strong> the co<\/em>ntent of the World Heritage. <\/strong> <\/p>\n

The oldest parts of the canal date back to the 5th century BC, although the various sections were finally combined during the Sui Dynasty (581–618 AD).<\/p>\n
