Wedding banquets are an im<\/em>portant part of wedding ceremo<\/em>nies in China. If someone is going to get married, he\/she usually asks his\/her relatives, friends and colleagues to attend a banquet in ho<\/em>nor of such an event. Simon attended his friend Lily’s wedding ceremony at the weekend and talks a<\/em>bout it with Da Wei. <\/p>\n

"\u559d\u559c\u9152(h\u0113 x\u01d0 ji\u01d4 )",<\/strong> literally meaning "drink joyful spirits", refers to "attend wedding feast". In China, it is common for newlywed couples to hold an opulent wedding banquet. Upon inviting others to join their wedding, the couple may say, "\u8bf7\u4f60\u559d\u559c\u9152 (q\u01d0ng n\u01d0 h\u0113 x\u01d0 ji\u01d4)<\/strong> ", which means, "I am pleased to invite you to attend my wedding banquet." During the banquet, "\u559c\u7cd6 (x\u01d0 táng)"<\/strong> or wedding candy is handed out. <\/p>\n

In Chinese, "\u95e8(mén)"<\/strong> (door or gate) is usually used to refer to a family’s social status. In Da Wei’s reply, "\u8c6a\u95e8(háo mén )"<\/strong> refers to a rich and powerful family. Da Wei says he heard Lily married a big shot and joined a rich family, but Simon denies this using the Chinese idiom "\u95e8\u5f53\u6237\u5bf9(mén d\u0101ng hù duì)"<\/strong> to do so, which means the families are well-matched in terms of social status.<\/p>\n

Both "\u5ac1 (jià)" <\/strong>and "\u5a36 (q\u01d4)"<\/strong>  mean "marry" in Chinese, but their usages are quite different. We o<\/em>nly say: \u65b0\u5a18\u5ac1\u7ed9\u4e86\u65b0\u90ce<\/strong> (The bride marries the bridegroom)\uff0c\u65b0\u90ce\u5a36\u4e86\u65b0\u5a18<\/strong>(The bridegroom marries the bride)\u3002Therefore, we use "\u5ac1" when explaining that a women has married a man, and "\u5a36" to explain that a man has married a woman. In the last sentence, "\u5f52\u5bbf(gu\u012b sù )",<\/strong> which means "final destination", is o<\/em>nly used when talking a<\/em>bout women and is often used to refer to a woman’ s husband.<\/div>\n
