It was compiled by the Later Han period \u540e\u6c49 (25-220 CE) scholar Xu Shen \u8bb8\u614e.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">  <\/table>\n<p>  \t<span><strong><span>Exemplarious translation:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>  \t<\/span><span><\/p>\n<div><span>\uff11\u4e0a\uff0e\u3010  [\u4e00]\u3011<\/span>\u60df\u521d\u592a\u59cb\u9053\u7acb\u4e8e\u4e00\u3002\u9020\u5206\u5929\u5730\uff0c\u5316\u6210\u4e07\u7269\u3002\u51e1\u4e00\u4e4b\u5c5e\u7686\u4ece\u4e00\u3002\u4e8e\u6089\u5207\u3002<span>\u3010  [\u5f0c]\u3011\u53e4\u6587\u4e00\u3002<\/span><\/div>\n<div>1A. Unity : It is, that the start of the Great Begin of the Way is based upon Unity. It divides Heaven and Earth and forms the ten thousand creations. All things related to &quot;one&quot; have the \u4e00 as part of the character (\u5143\u3001\u5929\u3001\u4e15\u3001\u540f). Pronounced like Y- and -I (yi). \u5f0c is an old character for \u4e00.<\/div>\n<p>  \t<\/p>\n<div><span>\u3010  [\u5929]\u3011<\/span>\u98a0\u4e5f\u3002\u81f3\u9ad8\u65e0\u4e0a\u3002\u4ece\u4e00\u3001\u5927\u3002\u4ed6\u524d\u5207\u3002<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div>Heaven (tian): is the summit (dian). The highest point where nothing can mount above. The character is compounded of &quot;one&quot; and &quot;great&quot;. Prounounced like T- and -IAN (tian).<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>  \t<span><\/p>\n<div><span>\u3010  [\u4e0a]\u3011<\/span>\u9ad8\u4e5f\u3002\u6b64\u53e4\u6587\u4e0a\u3002\u6307\u4e8b\u4e5f\u3002\u51e1\u4e0a\u4e4b\u5c5e\u7686\u4ece\u4e0a\u3002\u65f6\u638c\u5207\u3002<span>\u3010  \u3011\u7bc6\u6587\u4e0a\u3002<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Above: is high. It is the old character for \u4e0a, character type &quot;pointing to situation&quot;. All things related to &quot;above&quot; have the \u4e0a as part of their character (\u5e1d\u3001\u65c1\u3001\u4e0b). Pronounced like SH- and -ANG (shang).  is the Small Seal script character for \u4e0a.<\/div>\n<p>  \t<\/span><span><\/p>\n<div><span>\u3010  [\u5e1d]\u3011<\/span>\u8c1b\u4e5f\u3002\u738b\u5929\u4e0b\u4e4b\u53f7\u4e5f\u3002\u4ece\u4e0a\u3001\u673f\u58f0\u3002\u90fd\u8ba1\u5207\u3002<span>\u3010  \u3011<\/span>\u53e4\u6587\u5e1d\u3002\u53e4\u6587\u8bf8\u4e0a\u5b57\u7686\u4ece\u4e00\uff0c\u7bc6\u6587\u7686\u4ece\u4e8c\u3002<span>\u3010\u4e8c\u3011<\/span>\u53e4\u6587\u4e0a\u5b57\u3002\u8f9b\u3001\u793a\u3001\u8fb0\u3001\u9f99\u3001\u7ae5\u3001\u97f3\u3001\u7ae0\uff0c\u7686\u4ece\u53e4\u6587\u4e0a\u3002<\/div>\n<div>Emperor (di): is careful (di). Denomination for the true ruler of the earth. Deriving from &quot;above&quot; and the sound of \u673f ce or qi. Pronounced like D- and I (di).  is an old character for \u5e1d. All old style characters with the radical \u4e0a are written with a simple stroke \u4e00, the Small Seal style characters with a double stroke \u4e8c. \u4e8c is an old character for \u4e0a. The following characters are written with the old style \u4e0a: <i>xin<\/i> (a celestial stem), <i>shi<\/i> (showing), <i>chen<\/i> (an earthly branch), <i>long<\/i> (dragon), <i>tong<\/i> (young), <i>yin<\/i> (sound) and <i>zhang<\/i> (stanza).<\/div>\n<p>  \t<\/span><span><\/p>\n<div><span>\uff18\u4e0a\uff0e\u3010  [\u4eba]\u3011<\/span>\u5929\u5730\u4e4b\u6027\u6700\u8d35\u8005\u4e5f\u3002\u6b64\u7c40\u6587\u8c61\u81c2\u80eb\u4e4b\u5f62\u3002\u51e1\u4eba\u4e4b\u5c5e\u7686\u4ece\u4eba\u3002\u5982\u90bb\u5207\u3002<\/div>\n<div>8A. Man: the worthiest of all the beings between Heaven and Earth. This is the Large Seal character depicting of a man with arms and legs. All things related to man have the \u4eba as part of their character. Pronounced like R- and -IN (ren).<\/div>\n<p>  \t<\/span><span><\/p>\n<div><span>\u3010  [\u8001]\u3011<\/span>\u8003\u4e5f\u3002\u4e03\u5341\u66f0\u8001\u3002\u4ece\u4eba\u3001\u6bdb\u3001\u5315\uff0c\u8a00\u987b\u53d1\u53d8\u767d\u4e5f\u3002\u51e1\u8001\u4e4b\u5c5e\u7686\u4ece\u8001\u3002\u5362\u7693\u5207\u3002<\/div>\n<div>Old: aged. Seventy years is old. Compounded of the characters for man, hair and change, saying that beard and hair becoming white. All things related to old age have the \u8001 as part of their character (like \u8006\u3001\u58fd\u3001\u5b5d).
