\tWhen reed and rush grew green, grew green,
\tAnd dews to hoar-frost changed,
\tOne whom they speak of as "that man"
\tSomewhere the river ranged.
\tUpstream they went in quest of him,
\tA long and toilsome way;
\tDownstream they went in quest of him;–
\tIn mid-stream there lay!When reed and rush grew tall, grew tall,
\tAnd dews lay yet undried,
\tHe whom they speak of as "that man"
\tWas by the riverside.
\tUpstream they searched for him, along
\tThe toilsome, deep defile;
\tDownstream again-and there he lay,
\tMidway, upon the isle!<\/p>\n

\tWhen reed and rush were cut and gone,
\tAnd dews still lingered dank,
\tHe whom they speak of as "that man"
\tWas on the river's bank.
\tUpstream they searched for him, along
\tThe toilsome right-hand road;
\tDownstream, –and on the island there,
\tIn mid-stream, he abode!<\/p>\n
