I’m not going to help you recognize RMB coins and bills in this post.  I won’t talk a<\/em>bout how to count mo<\/em>ney in Chinese language either. What I’m going to share with you in this post is how to talk a<\/em>bout mo<\/em>ney in Chinese. I’m hoping this post can help you to understand “mo<\/em>ney talk” in Chinese better.<\/p>\n

The two key characters that Chinese use to describe mo<\/em>ney are the first things you need to remember:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \u94b1  qián  (money)   and    \u91d1  j\u012bn (gold)<\/p>\n

\u94b1 qián is used to name mo<\/em>ney in general sense. \u91d1 j\u012bn usually refers to mo<\/em>ney that is used for certain purpose.<\/p>\n

In ancient China, gold and silver were used as real money. That’s the reason why character \u91d1 j\u012bn  still refers to mo<\/em>ney in modern Chinese. Such as:<\/p>\n

    \u5956\u91d1 ji\u01ceng j\u012bn  (literal: reward gold) – bonus<\/p>\n

    \u57fa\u91d1 j\u012b j\u012bn (literal: foundation gold)  – funding, foundation<\/p>\n

    \u5b9a\u91d1 dìng j\u012bn (literal: co<\/em>nfirmation gold)  –  deposit<\/p>\n

    \u62bc\u91d1 y\u0101 j\u012bn (literal: deposit gold)  –  deposit<\/p>\n

    \u517b\u8001\u91d1 y\u01ceng l\u01ceo j\u012bn (literal: support old gold)  –  pension<\/p>\n

As for \u94b1 qián , it simply refers to mo<\/em>ney in general sense. However, you do need to have a good understanding on how \u94b1 qián  is “treated” or ”nicknamed”  in Chinese language.  So you won’t get co<\/em>nfused or co<\/em>nfuse others in a real life coversation. Let’s go over the following Chinese slang and vocab a<\/em>bout mo<\/em>ney together:<\/p>\n

    \u6d17\u94b1  x\u01d0 qián  (literal: wash money)  –  mo<\/em>ney laundering<\/p>\n

    \u70e7\u94b1 sh\u0101o qián (literal: burn money)  –  to spend mo<\/em>ney in a crazy manner<\/p>\n

    \u6254\u94b1 r\u0113ng qián (literal: toss money)  –  to spend mo<\/em>ney on valueless things<\/p>\n

    \u8840\u6c57\u94b1 xuè hàn qián (literal: blood sweat money)  –  mo<\/em>ney that is earned through ho<\/em>nest hard work<\/p>\n

    \u9ed1\u94b1 h\u0113i qián (literal: black money)  –  dirty money<\/p>\n

    \u5356\u8eab\u94b1 mài sh\u0113n qián (literal: sell body money)  –  mo<\/em>ney that is earned through prostituting o<\/em>neself or selling o<\/em>neself into slavery<\/p>\n

The last but not the least two basic mo<\/em>ney words that you should not forget are :<\/p>\n

    \u6323\u94b1 zhèng qián  –  earn money<\/p>\n

    \u82b1\u94b1 hu\u0101 qián  –  spend money<\/p>\n
