M: But why? Wèi shénme? Wèi shénme?<\/p>\n

S: Because my uncle and aunt are arriving in Beijing today. They came all the way from New York. S: Ok, let’s look at the new stuff. I said, Duìbùq\u01d0, ML, w\u01d2 k\u01d2ngpà bùnéng c\u0101nji\u0101 n\u01d0de sh\u0113ngrì yànhuìle. Duìbùq\u01d0, ML, w\u01d2 k\u01d2ngpà bùnéng c\u0101nji\u0101 n\u01d0de sh\u0113ngrì yànhuìle.<\/p>\n

M: Duìbùq\u01d0, duìbùq\u01d0, we’ve learnt, means "sorry". \u6050\u6015\uff0cKONG PA, third tone fourth tone, k\u01d2ngpà, means ‘to be afraid’. <\/p>\n

S: And since ‘néng’ means ‘can’, néng, can you guess what ‘bùnéng’ means? Simple! Cannot, bùnéng, bùnéng.<\/p>\n

M: And the last new word in this sentence is ‘c\u0101nji\u0101’, CAN JIA, both first tone, means to take part in, to attend. So the whole sentence is –<\/p>\n

S: ML, w\u01d2 k\u01d2ngpà bùnéng c\u0101nji\u0101 n\u01d0de sh\u0113ngrì yànhuìle. W\u01d2 k\u01d2ngpà bùnéng c\u0101nji\u0101 n\u01d0de sh\u0113ngrì yànhuìle.<\/p>\n

M: Stuart bùnéng c\u0101nji\u0101 w\u01d2de sh\u0113ngrì yànhuìle. T\u0101 bùnéng c\u0101nji\u0101 w\u01d2de sh\u0113ngrì yànhuìle. Why? Wèishénme? Wèishénme?<\/p>\n

S: Because, my uncle and aunt are arriving in Beijing today. Y\u012bnwéi w\u01d2de g\u016bfu hé g\u016bm\u0101 j\u012bnti\u0101n dàob\u011bij\u012bng. w\u01d2de g\u016bfu hé g\u016bm\u0101 j\u012bnti\u0101n dàob\u011bij\u012bng.<\/p>\n

M: G\u016bm\u0101, GU MA, both first tone, g\u016bm\u0101, father’s sister. G\u016bm\u0101. And g\u016bfu, GU FU, g\u016bfu, is g\u016bm\u0101’s husband. We know in English we simply call them aunt and uncle, however, in Chinese, we have the names all different for calling father’s sisters and brothers, and mother’s sisters and brothers. We’ll explain bit by bit in our following lessons.<\/p>\n

S: My aunt and uncle came all the way from New York. W\u01d2de g\u016bm\u0101 hé g\u016bfu cóng n\u01d0uyu\u0113lái. W\u01d2de g\u016bm\u0101 hé g\u016bfu cóng n\u01d0uyu\u0113lái. N\u01d0uyu\u0113, NIU YUE, third tone first tone, n\u01d0uyu\u0113, New York.<\/p>\n

M: \u4ece\u7ebd\u7ea6\u6765\uff0cto come from New York, cóng n\u01d0uyu\u0113 lái. Notice the cóng somewher lái pattern is very useful, which means to come from somewher. For example, I came from Beijing. \u6211\u4ece\u5317\u4eac\u6765\u3002\u6211\u4ece\u5317\u4eac\u6765\u3002<\/p>\n

S: T\u0101 cóng shàngh\u01cei lái. He came from Shanghai. T\u0101 cóng shàngh\u01cei lái.<\/p>\n

M: And, they came from New York. T\u0101men cóng n\u01d0uyu\u0113 lái.<\/p>\n

S: Ah, ML, I almost forgot! W\u01d2 chàdi\u01cen wàngle. Look, I bought a gift for you.<\/p>\n

M: \u5fd8\u4e86\uff0cforgot, \u5fd8\u4e86\u3002And ‘to forget’ is simply \u5fd8\uff0cWANG, fourth tone, wàng. chàdi\u01cen, almost, chàdi\u01cen. W\u01d2 chàdi\u01cen wàngle. I almost forgot. W\u01d2 chàdi\u01cen wàngle.<\/p>\n

S: W\u01d2 m\u01ceile yíge l\u01d0wù g\u011bin\u01d0. I bought a gift for you. L\u01d0wù, LI WU, third tone fourth tone, l\u01d0wù, gift. And g\u011bin\u01d0 here means ‘for you’. The whole sentence again. ML, w\u01d2 chàdi\u01cen wàngle. W\u01d2 m\u01ceile yíge l\u01d0wù g\u011bin\u01d0. w\u01d2 chàdi\u01cen wàngle. W\u01d2 m\u01ceile yíge l\u01d0wù g\u011bin\u01d0. <\/p>\n
