S: On the table there is a cat\u684c\u5b50\u4e0a\u6709\u4e00\u53ea\u732b. Zhu\u014dzi shàng y\u01d2u yì zh\u012b m\u0101o.<\/p>\n

M: Under the chair there are two dogs. \u6905\u5b50\u4e0b\u9762\u6709\u4e24\u53ea\u5927\u72d7. y\u01d0zi xià miàn y\u01d2u li\u01ceng zh\u012b dà g\u01d2u.<\/p>\n

S: How exciting! Now the new stuff. \u6811\u4e0a. \u6811SHU shù, means ‘tree’. By the way, the measure word for ‘tree’ is\u68f5KE k\u0113. So how do we say, ‘three trees’?<\/p>\n

M: Duì le. \u4e09\u68f5\u6811s\u0101n k\u0113 shù. Ten trees. Too easy! \u5341\u68f5\u6811shí k\u0113 shù.<\/p>\n

S: The simplest way to say ‘in, or on a tree’ is shu4 shang, literally ‘tree on’. Same with ‘on the table’, simply\u684c\u5b50\u4e0azhu\u014dzi shàng.<\/p>\n

M: We have to use the appropriate measure word when referring to a specific tree, or table, or whatever. For example, ‘that tree’ \u90a3\u68f5\u6811nèi k\u0113 shù, or ‘this tree’, \u8fd9\u68f5\u6811zhèi k\u0113 shù, or to a definite number of trees, as when we said, shí k\u0113 shù.<\/p>\n

S: By the way, nèi k\u0113 shù, nà k\u0113 shù, nèi or n\u0113, mean exactly the same thing, namely, ‘that’. Nèi is the commonest. So, nà gè rén, ‘that man’, or nèi gè rén, yí yàng, the same.<\/p>\n

M: It’s the same with ‘this’, you can say zhè, for ‘this’ something or other, or, more commonly, zhèi.<\/p>\n

S: So say ‘this table’ using zhè and then zhèi, and remember the measure word for zhu\u014dzi is\u5f20ZHANG zh\u0101ng. H\u011bn h\u01ceo. zhè zh\u0101ng zhu\u014dzi. Zhèi zh\u0101ng zhu\u014dzi.<\/p>\n

M: Back to our suspense story. Now, what is\u4e00\u53ea\u9e1fNIAO ni\u01ceo. Duìle, a bird, ni\u01ceo. Notice the measure word\u53eaZHI zh\u012b. It’s used as the measure word for quite a few types of animal and bird. Now say, Over there is one bird. Méicuò. \u90a3\u8fb9\u6709\u4e00\u53ea\u9e1fnèibi\u0101n, or nàbi\u0101n, y\u01d2u yìzh\u012b ni\u01ceo.<\/p>\n

S: And\u4e00\u53ea\u732bis a cat, m\u0101o MAO m\u0101o.<\/p>\n

M: And a dog is\u4e00\u53ea\u72d7GOU g\u01d2u.Now say ‘there is one cat’. Duìle. \u6709\u4e00\u53ea\u732by\u01d2u yìzh\u012b m\u0101o.<\/p>\n

S: And, ‘there are two dogs’. H\u011bn h\u01ceo. \u6709\u4e24\u53ea\u72d7y\u01d2u li\u01d2ngzh\u012b g\u01d2u.<\/p>\n

M: \u4e00\u53ea\u5c0f\u9e1f\uff0c\u4e00\u53ea\u732b\uff0c\u548c\u4e24\u53ea\u5927\u72d7. What a mixture!<\/p>\n
