Initials<\/h3>\n

Initials are called \u58f0\u6bcd in simplified Chinese( pinyin: sh\u0113ngm\u01d4). There are 21 initials excluding y and w.<\/p>\n

The co<\/em>nventional order is:
b, p, m, f; d, t, ,n, l; g, k, h; j, q, x; zh, ch, sh, r; z, c, s<\/p>\n

Pro<\/em>nunciation Guide for zh, ch, sh, r<\/h3>\n

The letters zh, ch, sh, r are known as the retroflex initials, meaning that they should be pro<\/em>nounced with the to<\/em>ngue curled backwards.<\/p>\n

The following guide is given in terms of English pronunciation. They are approximate, as there are some sounds of Pinyin do not correspond directly to sounds in English.<\/p>\n

1.\tzh: as j in “just”, but with your to<\/em>ngue tip curled far back.<\/p>\n
