拔尖（儿）bájiān(r) the top best; outstanding
Usage: “拔尖”是口语词，常用的有两个意思，一是形容人或者事物是超出一般的，最好的；二是指某人遇到事情或者比较大的场面，喜欢出风头。“拔尖” is a spoken language which describes people or things better than the ordinary ones or the top best. It also refers someone who likes to show off coming off a thing or big occasion.

开小差(kāi xiǎo chāi) slope away; daydreaming
Usage: “开小差” 原指军人脱离队伍私自逃跑,现在常用来比喻思想不集中,做事不专心。“开小差” original means a solider deserted from the army. Now it indicates who cannot concentrate on doing something.

吃苦 (chīkǔ ) to suffer or to bear hardships Usage: “吃苦”的意思是遭受痛苦或者经受艰苦。“吃苦”是离合词，中间可以插入数量词，如可以说“吃了很多苦”“吃了点儿苦”等。The word “吃苦” means The literal meaning of “吃苦” means eating bitter. It is a metaphor of suffering or bearing hardships. This is a detachable clutch word which can be inserted a number and a measure wordwith quantifiers, you can say “吃了很多苦” “吃了点儿苦”.

插手  (chāshǒu) to intervene; to meddle into Usage: “插手”的意思是参与、管理或者干涉。“插手某事”是常用结构。“插手”means to intervene or to interfere. People often say“插手……事务”.

炮灰 (pàohuī) cannon fodder; victim
Usage: “炮灰”原义是指炮弹打完以后落下的灰尘，现多指成为别人利益牺牲品的人。“炮灰”means the cannon fodder. Now, it indicates someone who is sacrificed for other’s benefits.

海归 (Hǎiguī) people who return to their home countries after finishing studying or working overseas

风声 (fēngshēng) Sound of the wind; news or rumor Usage:  “风声”的本义是指风的声音，比喻传播出来的消息，通常只是隐隐约约还不太确定的消息。The original meaning of “风声” is the sound of the wind. It metaphorically means news or rumor which is not so sure unusually.
