News in China: farmer in China

China’s transformation into the “workshop of the world” just over a decade ago was powered by rural migrant workers earning less than their counterparts at the start of the UK’s industrial revolution in the 18th century as they produced consumer goods for shopping malls worldwide. Now, in a reversal set to drive China’s next big economic evolution, an estimated 220m migrant workers are becoming potent consumers in their own right.
This cohort spent Rmb4.2tn ($677bn) on consumer goods and services in 2012, according to a nationwide survey of 1,500 migrants by China Confidential, a Financial Times research service. Putting this into context, it is equivalent to 1.5 times total consumer spending in Indonesia last year and 23 per cent more than that of Turkey in 2011.
The shift is a metaphor for the country itself, deriving as much from psychological, social and generational shifts as economic inflection points. Migrants born into the relative plenty of the 1990s are considerably more spendthrift than those born in the 1980s and 1970s, spending 53 per cent of their incomes, compared with 47.2 per cent and 38.3 per cent respectively, the survey shows.
Much of their monthly discretionary spending goes on mass consumer items such as instant noodles, fast food, beer, soft drinks, clothing, footwear and mobile phones. While brand consciousness remains rudimentary, preferences for some brands – foreign and domestic – are rapidly emerging as the cohort climbs the income ladder. These include Uni-President and Master Kong noodles; KFC and McDonald’s for fast food; Nokia and Samsung for mobile phones; Anta and Li-Ning sportswear; Shuanghui for processed meat; Snow and Tsingtao for beer; and Taobao for online shopping.
Such early fumbles toward brand sophistication are remarkable in a group treated with almost universal condescension by city dwellers only a decade ago. Leslie Chang, author of Factory Girls , a book about the migrant phenomenon, describes how bosses – secure in the knowledge that there were numberless millions more would-be workers than jobs – would treat employees with ill-disguised disdain.

Why do Chinese Sweep Tomb on Qingming?

Grave-sweeping is a traditional custom in Chingming festival. Why do we visit the graves of their ancestors? Long time ago, there was a king named Liu Pang(刘邦). When he won the war and became a king, he went back to his country with honor. Liu Pang wanted to express his respect and appreciation for his parents, so he went to his parents’ tombs to burn incense. However, he couldn’t find their tombs because of the war. Liu Pang felt very sad, but he didn’t give up. Suddenly, he got an idea. He took out a sheet of paper, tore it to many pieces, and threw it into sky. At that time, he praised, “ God, Please help me to find my parents’ tombs. Let these small pieces of paper freeze at one place. Lead me to find the tombs.” It was so strange that those small pieces of paper stop at one place. Finally Liu Pang found his parents’ tombs by following these papers. That’s why we put some pieces of color papers under small stones on the ancestors’ tombs.
Known as the Grave-sweeping or Spring Remembrance, Ching Ming ("clear and bright"), is when Chinese families show their respect by visiting the graves of their ancestors to clear away weeds, touch up gravestone inscriptions and make offerings of wine and fruit. Ancestor worship is a Chinese tradition dating back thousands of years.

The great emperor of the Han Dynasty:Liu Che

Liu Che was was the seventh emperor of the Han Dynasty of China. Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty, was in power from 140 B.C. to AD 87. During his reign, China ushered in the flourishing age of more than 50 years.
In the early Han Dynasty, Emperor Liu Bang appointed some people of Liu’s family to various parts of China as the dukes, hoping to remain the country in Liu’s family. Some of the dukes were very powerful; they could have armies in their jurisdiction and had the rights of collecting rents and taxes, forging cash and appointing and removing officials. Later, these dukes were so powerful that they seriously threatened the governance of the central government.
After Emperor Wudi came into power, he allowed these dukes divide their fiefs to their offspring to establish new vassal states. This was called “Decree of Promoting Imperial Beneficence.” When one vassal state was divided into several smaller ones, the direct fief became smaller and the duke would have no power to threat the central government. Later, Emperor Wudi removed the ranks of nobility of many dukes. After long-term struggle, the threats of the vassal states to the central government disappeared and the system of centralization was strengthened.
During the reign of Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty, the Confucian Dong Zhongshu further expanded the Confucianism in order to meet the demands of political centralization.
First, he announced that the heaven was the master of everything and the emperor was the son of the heavy. The son of the heavy ruled the people on behalf of the heavy. Thus, all the people should be subject to the emperor’s ruling and dukes should also obey the orders of the emperor. This was known as “Great Unification.”
Second, he proposed the suggestion of following only the Confucianism while banning all other thoughts. Confucianism was made the only thought in the country and all other ideologies were forbidden from spreading so as to unify ideology and consolidate political rules.
Emperor Wudi of Han Dynasty adopted Dong Zhongshu’s idea and many Confucianism in the government were promoted to be senior officials and the Confucianism gradually became the ruling ideology of the feudal society.
Wudi's reign resulted in or the vast territorial expansion, development of a strong and centralized state resulting from his governmental re-organization, including his promotion of Confucian doctrines. In the field of historical social and cultural studies, Wudi is known for his religious innovations and patronage of the poetic and musical arts, including development of the imperial Music Bureau into a prestigious entity.

Chinese Architecture: Zhaozhou Bridge

The Zhaozhou Bridge is located in Zhaoxian County of Hebei Province. The bridge was named after the county, which was called Zhaozhou in ancient times. The Zhaozhou Bridge was built in the Kaihuang Period (595-605 AD) of the Sui Dynasty by craftsman Li Chun some 1400 years ago. It is China's and the world's oldest and best preserved big stone arch bridge, having a far-reaching impact on the bridge building of later ages. What deserves a special mention is the "open spandrel" structure of the bridge, which was unprecedented in the world's bridge building history. In Europe, the earliest open spandrel arch bridges are those in France and Luxemburg, but they were built about 1100 years later than the Zhaozhou Bridge of China.
