Lesson 050 I Want to Eat Fish.

 M: Dajia hao. Huan ying ni dao Xianzai Xue Hanyu. Wo shi ML.
S: Nimen hao, wo shi Stuart. First, Say, ‘I fancy eating meat’.
M: Hen hao. Wo xiang chi rou. Wo xiang chi rou.
S: Now, ‘do you fancy fish?’
M: Dui le. 你想吃鱼吗, ni xiang chi yu ma?
S: And ‘menu’ is? mei cuo. Caidan, caidan.
M: Hao. Zhe shi caidan. Wo kan yi kan.
S: Now we’ll order some food. 现在我们点菜, xianzai women dian cai.
M: Only the two of us, 只有我们两个人, zhi you women liang ge ren.
S: So, suoyi, don’t order too much. 所以, 不要点太多, suo yi, bu yao dian tai duo.
M: Wo tong yi. I fancy a cold dish 一个凉菜, yi ge liang cai; beef, 牛肉niurou; pork, 猪肉zhurou; mutton 羊肉 yangrou; chicken 鸡肉jirou; fish 鱼yu; and two veggie dishes; 和两个青菜, he liang ge qing cai.
S: 8 dishes! Is 8 dishes enough? 八个菜够吗, ba ge cai gou ma?
M: 八个菜。我想够了, ba ge cai, wo xiang gou le. I think that’s enough.
S: Oh dear, I’ll never lose weight in China!
M: Now to learn the new stuff.
S: Only the two of us, 只有我们两个人.
M: zhi you women liang ge ren. 只ZHI zhi, means ‘only’ zhi. 有 YOU you, here means ‘is’ or ‘are’. 只有 there’s only; women liang ge ren, we two people. Zhi you women liang ge ren, there’s only two of us. Say it, zhi you women liang ge ren. Zai lai yi ci: zhi you women liang ge ren.
S: 所以, 不要点太多. 所以 SUO YI suoyi, is ‘therefore’, or ‘so’, suo yi. 不要 bu yao, ‘don’t’. dian tai duo, order too much. So don’t order too much. Suo yi, bu yao dian tai duo.
S: Now let’s quickly learn some animals. First, a member of the cattle family is 牛NIU niu. Niu. Say mooo, then niu. Good. Help to remember it.
M: And ‘rou’, ROU, rou, is meat, 肉。So niu2rou4, literally ‘cattle meat’ is – of course beef. Niúròu, 牛肉。
S: 猪 ZHU zhu is ‘pig’. So pork is?
M: Duile, zhurou, zhu rou.
S: 羊 YANG yang is sheep. So what is mutton? Right, Yangrou, yangrou.
M: 鸡 JI ji, is a chicken. The meat is? Yes, ji rou, ji rou.
S: And 青QING, 1st tone, qing, means ‘green’. Qing cai, green leafy veggies. Qing cai.

M: Ba ge cai, wo xiang gou le.

Lesson 046 Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

M: Stuart, what lesson do we learn today? 今天我们学第几课, jin tian women xue di ji ke?
S: 今天我们学第四十六课xue di si shi liu ke.
M: 没错, not wrong, mei cuo! Lesson 46, di si shi liu ke.
S: Hey, this is a good time so learn to say ‘yesterday’ and ‘tomorrow’.
M: Hao zhuyi.
S: Try to pick out ‘yesterday’ and ‘tomorrow’. Remember, the little le after a verb makes it past tense.

M: Now say, ‘lesson 45’. …. Dui le. Di si shi wu ke. Di si shi wu ke.
S: Now try, ‘yesterday we learnt lesson 45’.
M: Dui le. Zuo tian women xue le di si shi wu ke. Zuo tian women xue le di si shi wu ke.
S: Now say, ‘today we learn lesson 46’ ….. Dui le, jin tian women xue di si shi liu ke.
M: And ‘tomorrow’, 明天 MING TIAN ming tian, 2nd tone 1st tone, ming tian. Try it, ming tian, ming tian.

S: So we’ve just learnt another way to ask a question. What was the first? Right, just put a little ma on the end. Ni e ma?
M: Or we can say, ‘you hungry not hungry?’ 你饿不饿? Ni e bu e?
S: Now use this type of question to ask, ‘are you tired, lei, tired?
M: Dui le, ‘你累不累, ni lei bu lei.
S: Now try, ‘are you going?’ ….
M: right! 你去不去, ni qu bu qu?
S: Now try, ‘do you like Chinese food?’ ….
M: Dui le! 你喜欢不喜欢中餐, ni xihuan bu xihuan zhongcan?
S: Hen hao. Now try to use it for the Ok in ‘we’ll go eat, Ok?’
M: Dui le. 我们吃饭去, 好不好. All together, women chi fan qu, hao bu hao? 再来一次, once again, zai lai yi ci. women chi fan qu, hao bu hao?
S: 我们吃中餐,好不好, say it, women chi zhongcan, hao bu hao?

S: But now. It’s homework, gongke, time.
M: Using both types of question, practice asking someone, ni, or some people, nimen, ‘are you hungry, tired, clever and, eating – that’s chi bu chi; drinking – he bu he; going – qu bu qu; and, coming – lai bu lai.

Lesson 035 I Want Cola.

 S: 请来一个可乐, and, pay attention, listeners! 两个啤酒, liang ge pijiu.
WAITRESS: 一个可乐, 两个啤酒, yi ge kele, liang ge pi jiu.
S: Dui, xiexie.
S: Here come our drinks. So what’s the word for ‘two’ when you ask for two beers? It’s not the er, as in yi er san si. Listen carefully.
WAITRESS: 一个可乐, 两个啤酒. liang ge pijiu.
M: Dui le, it’s liang LIANG liang. We always use liang when we want to say ‘two people’, two glasses, two dollars, in fact, two anythings. Er, also meaning two, is used for telephone numbers and the like.
S: So how do we say, ‘two twos’?
M: Dui le, liang ge er, liang ge er. Now, back to our waitress.
WAITRESS: Yi ge kele, liang ge pijiu.
S: Xiexie. How much, 多少? How much money? 多少钱, duoshao qian?
WAITRESS: 一个可乐是四块. 两个啤酒是九块.
S: So how much is the bill? Remember, a kuai is one renminbi, or one yuan.
WAITRESS: Yi ge kele shi si kuai. Liang ge pijiu shi jiu kuai.
S: Worked it out? Si kuai, and jiu kuai. Four and nine is …. Dui le. 十三块, shi san kuai. I give the waitress fifteen kuai. 给你十五块, gei ni shi wu kuai.
WAITRESS: 找您两块. Zhǎo nín liǎng kuài.

S: Say, ‘he is my colleague’…
M: Dui le. 他是我的同事, ta shi wo de tongshi.
S: The drinks are ordered; 一个可乐, 两个啤酒, yi ge kele, liang ge pijiu. 多少钱, duoshao qian?

Lesson 036 Revision of Ordering Drinks

 M: 朋友们,你们好. 我是曼丽. With wo de tongshi, Stuart.
S: Da jia hao!
M: We’ll start with a puzzle. I work with Stuart. Stuart是我的同事, Stuart shi wo de tongshi.
S: What does 同事, tongshi mean?
M: A clue: tongyi, meaning ‘agree’, literally means, ‘same idea’. And tongshi literally means ‘same business’.
S: So tongshi is? Dui le, colleague, or co-worker. So say, ‘he is my colleague’. …..
M: Hen hao. 他是我的同事. Ta shi wo de tong shi.
S: Women zai jiǔbā. Listen and repeat with us, loudly. The drinks aren’t free, so we have to learn a bit about money, and listen out for how we say ‘two beers’.
M: With us are Mary and Li xiansheng. 李先生是玛丽的朋友, Li xiansheng shi Mali de pengyou. Stuart 是我的同事, Stuart shi wo de tongshi.
S: Mary wants a cola, Li xiansheng a beer, and I fancy another beer. ML’s ok for now.
M: Stuart calls the waitress

WAITRESS: What would you like? 你要什么? Ni yao shenme?
