B: let’s say I want to fly to HK, with my passport too of course. Yajie, what’s the Chinese word for passport?
Y: it’s hu4 zhao4. We’ve mentioned it before.
B: hu4 zhao4 I’ve got my hu4 zhao4, I also need a visa.
Y: Ah, you mean a qian1 zheng4.
B: qian1 zheng4. I’m lucky; I’ve actually got a multiple entry visa. How do I say that?
Y: 多次入境签证is a multiple entry visa.
B: duo1 ci4 ru2 jing4 qian1 zheng4.
Y: duo1 ci4 means multiple,
B: duo1 ci4
Y: ru2 jing4 means entry,
B: ru2 jing4
Y: qian1 zheng4 means visa,
B: qian1 zheng4
Y: duo1 ci4 ru2 jing4 qian1 zheng4
B: duo1 ci4 ru2 jing4 qian1 zheng4 a multiple entry visa. Then how do I say I’ve got a multiple entry visa.
Y: And you can say, 我的是多次入境签证
B: wo3 de shi4 duo1 ci4 ru2 jing4 qian1 zheng4
Y: wo3 de means mine, my passport,
B: wo3 de,
Y: shi4 means is.
B: shi4.
Y: wo3 de shi4 duo1 ci4 ru2 jing4 qian1 zheng4
B: wo3 de shi4 duo1 ci4 ru2 jing4 qian1 zheng4 I’ve got a multiple entry visa.

Lesson 027 Bargaining

Yajie: Perfect Chinese your way, in only five minutes a day. Welcome to our Chinese Studio. 早上好 everybody, I’m Yajie.
Cam: And I’m Cam. 早上好(zǎoshang hǎo). What shall we learn today?
Yajie: Last time we learned some expressions when shopping. 元(yuan), 角(jiao), 分(fen).
Cam: 元(yuan), 角(jiao), 分(fen). I also remember 块 (kuai) and 毛 (mao), like六块(liu kuai) and 一毛(yi mao)..
Yajie: Right. 六块(liu kuai) is six yuan ,and一毛(yi mao) is 0.1 yuan.
Cam: OK. Then if I want to buy something, I can ask the seller in Chinese “这个多少钱?” (zhège duōshao qián?) How much is it? Right?
Yajie: Exactly. 这个多少钱?How much is it? If you are not satisfied with the price, In China, you can begin bargaining, and that is what we are going to learn today.

Yajie: 早上好(zǎoshang hǎo), Cam. Last week we learned holiday greetings and also how to wish somebody a happy birthday. Let’s have a quick review, ok?
Cam: Ok. Happy Birthday is祝你生日快乐(zhù nǐ shēng rì kuài lè).
Yajie: And how do you say “I wish you good health!” in Chinese?
Cam: Well, it’s祝你身体健康!(zhù nǐ shēntǐ jiànkāng).

Cam: 祝你万事如意! (zhù nǐ wàn shì rúyì!)

Y: it’s shou3 ti2 xiang1.
B: shou3 ti2 xiang1
Y: shou3 ti2 means portable,
B: shou3 ti2,
Y: xiang1 means case or box,
B: shou3 ti2 xiang1.
Y: shou3 ti2 xiang1. suitcase.
B: …. And back pack ?
Y: it’s bei1 bao1.
B: bei1 bao1
Y: bei1 means back,
B: bei1,
