Han Dynasty Grave in Xuzhou

The Chinese people say, “Xi’an represents cultures in Qin Dynasty and Tang Dynasty; Beijing represents cultures in Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty; and Xuzhou represents cultures in Western Han Dynasty and Eastern Han Dynasty”. As the famous Chinese city with abundant historical and cultural heritages, Xuzhou boasts the top 3 Han cultural elements: Han Dynasty graves, Han terracotta warriors and horses, and Han portrait rocks. Of these top 3 Han cultural elements, Han graves rank first.
Xuzhou, formerly known as Pengcheng in old times, is the hometown to Liu Bang, Emperor Gaozu of Han, and the origin place of Western Han and Eastern Han cultures. During the 400 plus years in these two dynasties, Xuzhou had 13 Kings of Chu and 5 Kings of Pengcheng. And the grave cluster of these 18 kings is called “18 Han Dynasty Graves in Xuzhou”.
As a matter of fact, a kingdom called Xiapi was also founded in the territory of Xuzhou in Eastern Han Dynasty. This Xiapi Kingdom had 4 kinship kings. According to Han laws, the kings must be buried in their fief after their death.
In recent years, the archeological workers have been working hard to finalize the investigation and excavation of 8 Chu kings.
