Lesson 033 What Do You Want to Drink?

 S: 朋友们,你们好! Wo shi Stuart.
M: Wo shi ML. And let’s not waste time. 我们不要浪费时间 women bu yao langfei shijian.
S: Because we’re in the bar. Yinwei women zai jiuba. You’ll never find me wasting time in a bar. And the most important thing here is probably to get a drink. Now listen carefully.
M: Stuart, what do you want to drink? 你想喝什么? ni xiang he shenme?
S: I want a glass of beer. 我想喝一杯啤酒. Wo xiang he yi bei pijiu. ML, 你想喝什么? Ni xiang he shenme?

S: Try to catch the words for ‘to want’ or ‘to think of’, and ‘to drink’.

S: Dui le. To ‘think of’ or ‘want’, is xiang XIANG xiang. And ‘to drink’, right, he HE he, 1st tone. And ‘beer’ is pijiu, PI JIU, pi jiu. Another very important word, pijiu. Now say ‘I want to drink beer’…..
M: Dui le, 我想喝啤酒, wo xiang he pijiu.
S: Now catch the words for ‘a glass’. 我想喝一杯啤酒.
M: Wo xiang he yi bei pijiu. Get it? Dui le, yi bei, bei BEI bei, meaning ‘glass’ or ‘cup’.
S: Now say, no help from us, ‘He wants to drink beer’. ….
M: Dui le, 他想喝啤酒, ta xiang he pijiu.
S: Now, He wants to drink a glass of beer. ……
M: Feichang hao. 他想喝一杯啤酒, ta xiang he yi bei pijiu.

M: 我想喝冰水. Wo xiang he bing shui. Bing, BING bing, is ‘ice’. Shui SHUI shui, is ‘water’. Bing shui, iced water, say it, bing shui. Wo xiang he bing shui.

M: Xiaojie, qing lai yi bei bingshui. Xiaojie XIAO JIE xiaojie is a ‘miss’, a young woman, and how we address, for example, waitresses.

M: And maybe some strangers, so we might have to learn how to make introductions.

S: With a pengyou. Now, try to pick out how we say ‘to recognize’ or ‘know’ someone, ‘let me’, and to ‘introduce’. ML, do you recognize her friend? 你认识她的朋友吗? Ni renshi ta de peng you ma?
M: 不, 我不认识, wo bu renshi ta de pengyou.
MARY: Stuart, Manli, 你们好吗?

M: At the end of our last lesson, Stuart just needed his key, tā de yàoshi.
S: Now I have my key. Xiànzài wǒ yǒu wǒ de yàoshi.
M: So now we’ll go to your room. Xianzai women qu nide fangjian. Xianzai women qu nide fangjian.
S: Where’s the lift? 电梯在哪儿?Diàntī zài nǎr?

M: Dianti zai nar. Dian DIAN dian, means electric, like in ‘dianhua’, ‘electric words’, or ‘telephone’. Ti TI ti, is ‘ladder’, or ‘staircase’.
S: So guess what dianti means. Dui le. ‘Lift’ or ‘elevator’, dianti.
M: The lift is there. Diantizai nar, dianti zai nar.
S: Ever the gentleman, I said. ML, 妳先进.
M: ni xian jin qu. Xian XIAN xian, means ‘first’ or ‘before’. Jin JIN jin, 4th tone, here means ‘to enter’. Ni xian jin. You get in first.
S: Ni xian jin. Also polite, ML replied,
M: 不,你先进。But Stuart insisted.
S: Qing. Please.
M: We often say qing, when offering to let someone on the bus first, or go through the door first, that type of situation.
S: And I asked, ‘what floor?’ Ji lou. You often hear nice people ask you this in the lift, and you can ask them if they can’t reach the buttons.
M: ji lou? Ji JI ji, means ‘how many?’. Lou LOU lou, means ‘storey’, ‘floor’. Ji lou? What floor? Ji lou?
S: shi si lou, 14th floor, shi si lou.
M: The dialogue again. 现在我们去你的房间. Xianzai women qu nide fangjian.
S: 电梯在哪儿? Dianti zai nar?
M: 电梯在那儿. Dianti zai nàr.
S: ML, 妳先进, ni xian jin.
M: bù,nǐ xiān jìn.
S: Qing.
M: xiexie.
S: 几楼? Ji lou?
M: Shí sì lóu. shí sì lóu.
S: 好,我们去十四楼. Hao, women qu shisi lou.
M: And up we go! 我们上去. Women shang qu.

S: Woshi Stuart. It’s 复习 revision fùxí time. Lots to listen to and repeat. We’re going to move fast. kaishi!
M: The car’s come, 车来了,chē láile.
S:I’ll get my luggage. My luggage is very heavy. 我的行李很沉。Wo de xingli hen chen. Driver, can you help me? 司机,你能帮我吗? Siji, nǐ néng bāng wǒ ma?
TD: Mei wenti.
S: Xiexie.
M: Ni neng bang wo ma? Can you help me? Stuart could also have asked…
S: 你能帮忙吗?
M: Bāngmáng, add the máng MANG. bangmang, also means ‘help’. Please help, 请帮忙,qing bangmang.

M: Stuart wants to make a phone call. 他要打个电话. Ta yao da ge dianhua.

S: And we dive right in. At the end of the previous lesson we asked you to say the numbers from 1 to 99.
M: Let’s try a few. You say the Chinese. 28 – dui le. èr shí bā. 44– dui le, sì shí sì. 56 – wǔ shí liù.
S: Feichang hao. Wonderful. Time to get back to the Youyi Bin’guan – the Friendship Hotel.

M: Nín guì xìng? Guì GUI guì here means ‘noble’. Xìng XING xìng, 4th tone, is ‘family name’. Nin gui xing. A polite way to say, ‘What is your family name?’ Nín guì xìng?
S: My family name ‘Parkins’. Wǒ xìng Parkins. My given name is Stuart. Wǒ de míngzi shì Stuart.
M: Míngzi, MING ZI, ming zi. Given name.

DESK: ‘Let’s have a look’, or ‘I’ll check’. Wǒ kàn yī kàn.
M: kàn KAN kàn, is to ‘see’ or ‘look’. I’ll check, wo kan yi kan.

M: Zhǎo dào le. The zhǎo is like the zhǎo in zhǎo shéi, ‘who are you looking for?’. Zhǎo, to ‘look for’, zhǎo dào le. Found it! Zhǎo dào le!
DESK: Nín de fángjiān hàomǎ shì yāo sì bā jiǔ.
M: ‘Room’ is fángjiān FANG JIAN fangjian. Remember ‘telephone number’? Duì le, diànhuà hàomǎ. So what is ‘room number’? Right, it’s fángjiān hǎomǎ. Fangjian haoma.
S: So, my fáng jiān hào mǎ is 1489. Wǒ de fángjiān hàomǎ shì yāo sì bā jiǔ.

M: Xingli tài zhòng, hé xingli tài chén. 一样,yíyàng, the same, yíyàng, YI YANG, yíyàng, 2nd tone, 4th tone, yíyàng.
S: Ah, so chén and zhòng both mean ‘heavy’, but chén is a bit more colloquial. Now the dialogue again, no repetition, and faster.

S: Wo tongyi. Wode xingli tài duo le.
M: Ni de xingli yě tai zhong le.
S: Shide, wo de xingli tai chen le. Wo de xingli tai chen le.
M: 很好!
S: We’re STILL at the airport. Women hai zai jichang. Now mimic this short chat.
M: 我们走吧。我打车, wo da che.
S: 好,你打车。Ni da che, 我打电话, wo da dianhua.
M: wo da che. Wo da che. Dǎ DA DA dǎ, means to ‘hit’, dǎ. Chē CHE CHE chē chē. Say it chē, chē, 1st tone, che, means ‘vehicle’. But when we say “da che”, it doesn’t mean “hit a vehicle”, it means ‘get a taxi’. Wo da che, I’ll get a cab.
S: This is very common in Chinese. One word, like dǎ, can have several different meanings. For example, I also said, Wo da dian hua. Wo da dianhua. Diàn DIAN DIAN diàn, electricity, or electric. Diàn. Huà HUA HUA, hua, words. Guess what electric words means. Yes, telephone, dianhua. Another compound word. Da dianhua. Hit the phone? Well, kind of, it means ‘make a telephone call’. Da dianhua.
M: And usually we put the common classifier gè GE gè in front of it. Dǎ ge dianhua. Listen and repeat. Stuart, 我去打车。Wo qu da che. 你去哪儿?ni qu na’er?
S: Wo qu da ge dianhua. Wo qu da ge dianhua.
M: Hao, ni qu da ge dianhua. Ni qu da ge dianhua.

S: Na hen hao. Che lai le. And here’s the driver.
Taxi Driver: 你们去哪儿?nimen qu na’er?
M: 我们去友谊宾馆, wo men qu youyi binguan. We’re going to the Friendship Hotel. Youyi bin’guan.
TD: 没问题。No problem. Méi wèntí.
